Fishonomics/Snowy Grouper
Florida Keys field guide

Snowy Grouper.

Hyporthodus niveatus

Deep-drop trophy. 500–1000 ft, electric reels, big fillets.

Behavior

How they feed in the Keys

Snowys are the Atlantic deep-drop trophy of the Keys — they hold on hard structure and ledges in 400–1200 feet. The deep Gulf Stream edge off Islamorada and Marathon is classic snowy territory. Heavy electric-reel work, drop multi-hook rigs to bottom with 16+ oz of lead, and you're often onto fish within minutes. Average 8–25 lbs, with trophies into the 50s.

Water temp

50–62°F at depth

Active 45–68°F at the bottom

Tide

Less directly tide-driven (depth dampens surface tide effects), but bottom current still drives feed activity.

Current

Bottom current carries scent and bait. Surface-current variability matters less than the deep flow.

Weather

Calm seas required — fishing in 500+ ft requires staying directly over structure. Anything above 4 ft seas makes the technique very tough.

Pressure

Less impact at depth.

Time of day

All day at depth.

Moon phase

Less direct correlation. Spawning year-round with peaks April–August.

Tidal coefficient

Less direct.

Electric reels

A Daiwa Tanacom or LP Lectric is the deep-drop standard. Manual cranks at 800 ft are punishing.

Federal Atlantic limits

Snowy grouper has been very tightly managed in Atlantic federal waters — annual catch limits often close the season early. Always check before targeting.

Big whole squid on 12/0 circle hooks. Tough, stays on, snowys love them.

2

Cut bonito

Fresh chunks of bonito belly. Strong scent at depth.

3

Large eel chunks

When available — extreme scent attracts from the deep.

Alternates
  • Cut barracuda· Local Keys deep-drop staple bait.
  • Mackerel chunks· Backup option, reliable scent.
When to use what
  • Standard deep drop

3-hook deep-drop rig + 16–32 oz lead + whole squid on each hook + electric reel + 80 lb braid. Drop to bottom, reel up 5 cranks, wait.

No size limit (federal Atlantic; check current FWC).

Bag limit

Season

Atlantic: closed Jan 1 – Apr 30 for shallow-water grouper, but snowy is in the deepwater grouper aggregate. Annual federal closures common when ACL is hit.

Prohibited methods

Powerheads prohibited in state waters.

Note · Federal Atlantic snowy is one of the most-restricted species in the Keys. Annual quota often closes the harvest by mid-summer.

Bite-score factors

What actually moves the bite

Each factor is rated by how much it shifts the bite for this fish in the Keys. Calibrated against the Bite Score weights — see the Bite Score reference for what each factor measures.
