Florida Keys field guide

Bonita (Little Tunny).

Euthynnus alletteratus

Bait or sport. Surface schools, light tackle, big fight.

Behavior

How they feed in the Keys

"Bonita" in Florida usually refers to the Little Tunny (also called false albacore or bonito) — Euthynnus alletteratus. They're not great table fare, but they're an outstanding light-tackle sport fish and the #1 cut/strip bait for blue marlin, big snapper, and grouper. Schools push bait pods on the surface from spring through fall along reef edges and Stream-edge weed lines. Cast a small metal jig into a bust-up and hold on.

Water temp

Active 64–86°F

Tide

Current

Reef-edge current and Stream eddies concentrate fish on bait.

Weather

Calm-to-moderate days = surface bust-ups visible.

Stable.

Time of day

All day; surface activity peaks mid-morning.

Moon phase

Some lunar influence.

Tidal coefficient

Bait factory

A boat full of fresh bonita strips and chunks turns into a reef trip's secret weapon. Bonito-belly chunks are some of the best bottom-fishing scent baits.

Light tackle fight

On a 15 lb spin rod, a 12 lb bonita is a 25-minute fight. The fastest, hardest pull per pound of any common Keys fish.

  • Trolled feather + ballyhoo· Search method on the troll.
When to use what
  • Surface bust-up sight cast

1.5 oz metal jig on 20 lb spin. Cast into the school edge, fast retrieve.

  • Bait collection

Sabiki rig on a light rod near surface activity. 3-fish bonita meat freezer-stocked is the goal.
